With the move into digital publications new methods and mediums of engaging the reader have become available. Books are now no longer limited to only text, and new publication methods, such as Vlogs, are free and readily available to use with websites like YouTube. A study by GFk and Delliote showed that "86% UK consumers access news online frequently. However, more than three quarters of them (77%) said video improves their understanding of a story, and a whopping 85% said video brings a news story to life."(brooks,2013) This is not surprising as humans rely predominantly on visual stimulus to interpret the world around them, and photos have been used in publishing all the way back to the medieval era, not to mention the stylistic fonts of the day.
The effect of videos in a publication is obvious, more and more companies, especially news publishers, are realizing that is the future of engaging their audience. With the addition of videos to there Indonesian website the BBC "Saw an increase of more than 1,000% between July and September."(Dogramaci, 2014) The emergence of this new form of publication has allowed new ideas to spread at a rate that they probably couldn't have reached if they were only accessible through text. A medium I personally love and have used in my Blogs is called TedX(Technology, Education and Design) talks, which is where someone considered a "bright mind" gives a 15 minute speech on a field they have relevant experience in and are passionate that it could change the world in a positive sense, hence their slogan "Ideas worth spreading". The average views of a ted talk range from 4,000 views all the way up to 350,000 views and range from topics on education, sociology, self help and technologies.
The addition of videos into a publishing environment could potentially have positive effects in an educational scenario. Creator of Gamification Nation An Coppens explains in her video(coppens, 2013)how the use of videos can help engage children in reading not to mention that it could make education allot more economically feasible with the use of high quality engaging videos, especially in developing countries.
